The CWE is the workforce development arm of the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, whose affiliated unions represent over 1.2 million workers in the metropolitan region. The CWE union upgrade programs assist the incumbent workforce in maintaining and upgrading their skills and advancing their careers.

Course Overview:
This program focuses on the application of skills needed to provide routine patient care. The emphasis is on safety for self and patient. Competency is based on demonstrations and knowledge of geriatric care cases. A 30-hour nursing home externship supervised by a New York State licensed RN is required and mandated by the Department of Health. Nurse Aide Competency Examination and Certification Services under the New York State Department of Health regulate the CNA license exam and is administered by Prometric - NY Nurse Aide.

This course is designed to prepare you for the GED and college entrance exams. Participants will work together as a class, in small groups, and independently in consultation with the instructor. Our focus will be on reading text closely and connecting ideas between texts, the world, and life. You will be asked to write, beginning with personal narratives and moving to evidence based writing, including practice essays for the GED. You will also take practice tests.
